Sunnyvale, California – March 15, 2023

Started as a service bureau working with California County Recorders to archive land records on microfilm, BMI Imaging Systems has come a long way from those early days. Today, BMI’s production capability includes two imaging facilities with a staff of more than 60 employees and offers microfilm creation (as it’s done since the beginning), digital scanning and conversion of microfilm and hard copy paper records, digital-to-digital data migration, custom software coding and development, and secure hosting services through its Digital ReeL platform.

Over the 65 years in business many parts of the company have improved, especially in the technology and security areas. BMI is currently NIST SP 800-53 compliant, HIPAA compliant, is a CJIS-listed vendor, and is SOC 2 Type II certified.

BMI is a third generation, family-based private company, initially led by William (Bill) Whitney, who was the early President of the company following his nine year career in the FBI. He was succeeded in 1987 by his son and current President, Bill Whitney III. Bill started at BMI in 1976 and has successfully led the company through multiple technological changes in the industry. Following his commitment to the Marines and continuing the tradition, Bill’s son, Will, has been with BMI since 2013 and is currently Executive Vice President and head of Sales and Marketing.

Bill states, “Being with the firm for 47 years has been entertaining, to say the least! I’ve seen many ups and downs in the industry throughout my time here, but we’ve created a great culture led by a solid management team that helps us through any challenges. We’re successful because our folks are curious and always learning, energetic, and really enjoy what they do: helping clients digitize their records and create effective systems.”

About BMI

BMI Imaging Systems (originally Bay Microfilm Incorporated) incorporated in 1958 as a microfilm service bureau, working with County Recorders to archive land records on microfilm. In the early 1960s, services were expanded to include preservation microfilming of the rare books and manuscripts of leading California Universities. A Library Microfilms Division was also established, working with over 200 newspaper publishers to preserve California local history for libraries and archivists. A reputation for service, precision, and reliability led to steady expansion of BMI’s government, education, and commercial clients over the next two decades. By the early 1990’s, the records management industry had entered the digital age and BMI was at the forefront of this evolution. Clients were meeting their electronic document management needs by having BMI digitize their records, with BMI installing and supporting on-site document management software solutions.

Today, BMI’s production capability includes two imaging facilities with a staff of more than 60 technicians. With a focus on quality, accuracy, security, and innovation, BMI provides custom solutions that fit the unique requirements of each of its customers. In addition to providing document/microform imaging and indexing services of the highest standard, BMI offers public tenant, private tenant, and CJIS (Criminal Justice Information Services)-compliant community cloud hosting services, enabling secure access to client data via the Web. BMI also provides systems integration services, implementing turnkey document capture, management, and workflow solutions. BMI employs an in-house software development staff, a project management customer support staff, along with IT professionals that support internal and Web hosting operations.
